Yearly Checkups and Recommendations
Just like dogs and cats, birds need to be seen at least once a year for a thorough physical exam. This allows the doctor to evaluate the heart, lungs and air sacs, joints, skin and feathers, beak, eyes and ears and mouth and identify any problems your bird may have. The first time we see your bird, we will go through a complete history and husbandry evaluation to make sure the diet and environment is ideal for your pet's overall health.
Yearly bloodwork is highly recommended for ALL birds regardless of age. Why? Birds are very good at masking illness. Because they are prey animals, it is ingrained in them to act as normal as possible even when they are sick. This means that when your bird finally begins acting sick, the disease process has been going on long-term and medical attention is needed immediately. Yearly bloodwork can help detect underlying infections, liver and kidney disease, high cholesterol which may lead to heart disease, anemia, and more. Hopefully we can catch underlying problems before your bird starts showing symptoms. Birds with problems discovered early will have a much better chance of recovery.
