2. How often do you recommend my pet be seen?
We recommend every pet (dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, reptiles, and rodents alike) be seen a minimum of once a year. This is so we can ensure your pet is healthy and has not developed any abnormalities in the previous year. We recommend geriatric pets (any dog over 10 and any cat over 12) be seen twice yearly because problems can occur between visits such as heart disease or dental disease. Also, if your pet has a medical condition, we may recommend a checkup more often than once yearly.
3. Why do you need to do a heartworm test before prescribing my dog preventative?
We need to know your dog's heartworm status before prescribing any preventatives for three reasons: one, some heartworm preventatives are dangerous for heartworm positive dogs, and second, if your dog becomes heartworm positive and is on a preventative, there are reimbursements made by the manufacturers of the product that you may qualify for. Finally, if your dog is even weakly positive for heartworms, then steps need to be taken to ensure your pet is treated appropriately.
4. Why do you recommend heartworm prevention for indoor cats?
Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes. Since mosquitoes can come indoors, even indoor only cats are at risk. Studies have shown that up to 33% of cats found to be heartworm positive were only indoor cats. A monthly heartworm preventative will ensure your pet's protection. This monthly preventative will also protect your cat against intestinal parasites and fleas and ticks.
5. What is required for boarding?
We offer boarding to our current clients. We require your dog or cat to be current on all vaccines we give in our wellness exams and be on a heartworm preventative that protects against intestinal parasites as well. This is to protect not only your pet but other pets we have boarding in our clinic.
6. Why does your office not work with online pet pharmacies?
The FDA and AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) recently published warnings to pet owners about buying from online pharmacies. You can see the links to these publications by clicking on the "Veterinary Animal News" heading at the top of this page. We will gladly write you a written prescription, but we are no longer dealing directly with these pharmacies because we can not guarantee the safety or viability of the medication you order online. Your prescription can either be picked up at the reception desk or we can mail it to you. You will receive a copy of the FDA warning with your written prescription.
7. Can you give medical advice over the phone?
For the majority of cases, we need to see your pet first before giving any medical advice over the phone. This is for your pet's safety to make sure the appropriate medical advice is given.
8. Why do you like to take dogs into the back treatment area for their wellness exams?
Many dogs exhibit less anxiety in the back away from their owners, and this allows us to get blood for the heartworm test, give the vaccinations, take a fecal sample, and perform any nail trims or other procedures quickly and with less stress to your dog. If you ever feel nervous about letting your dog come into the back area, or just want to see everything we do, then please tell us and we will be happy to do everything in the room!
9. Can I hold my pet while it gets vaccinated?
For legal and safety issues both for you and your pet, one of our qualified technicians must hold your pet during medical procedures.
10. Do you offer payment plans?
We offer CareCredit for any service totaling $300 or more with 6 months interest-free in order to help you pay your bill. You can read more about CareCredit on our web page. If you think you might be interested in applying for CareCredit please let us know and we can help you through the application process in the clinic. You can also apply at home by following the links provided on our website and bring us your approval code.
11. Do you have any pets available for adoption?
We work with several foster homes and usually have one or two animals available for adoption. These animals are not kept at the clinic but if you are interested we can arrange for a meeting or put you in contact with the appropriate foster. Please understand that we are not an adoption facility and cannot take in surrendered or found pets. If you have found a stray animal please contact your local animal shelter.
